Plantable Seed Cards - Here's a Small Favor That Hits it Big With Guests

Plantable favors made a splash when they started. But now they're growing ever more popular as eco-awareness and weddings have started to stroll hand-in-hand.

Baby Trend Play Yard

The Green Revolution's led to a bevy of bride-pleasing "green" favors. But plantable seed favors, crafted from recycled paper and embedded with easy-grow wildflower seeds, lead the pack for several great reasons.

Baby Trend Play Yard

1) They're Portable and Fuss-Free. Brides wanting to gift their guests with "something green" have turned to favors ranging from bamboo stalks and tulip bulbs to tree seedlings in a box. Thoughtful as they are, these items require some care and skill from both gifter and guest. On the other hand, plantable wedding favors can just rest in a drawer until showtime.

2) They're the Fairest of Them All. Plantable favors come in an awesome array of shapes and colors, themes and styles. Why? Because the more brides want plantable favors, the more variety and styles designers are able to give them. With beta versions, your choices were pretty much cream-colored paper cut into hearts or flowers, but now plantable favors come in highly personal designs that suit every kind of weddings, from the rustic and earthy to the sleek and modern. Plus, they come at a super-affordable price point -- so much so that you can tuck them into save-the-dates or invites, and get your guests in the blooming mood a little early!

3) They're Foolproof in the Garden. Black thumbs rejoice! Is your touch so deadly that you've killed even spider plants or cacti? Not to worry -- even you can find bliss with today's plantable favors. For one, the directions are simplicity itself: place in soil, water, and forget (that's the part we're all good at). Then, enjoy the surprise. People are curious to see what comes up, but by the time it does, we've all moved on to car repairs or bottle feeding dramas. Then voila! Unexpected flowers!

But, let's go straight to the tough question: do people really plant these? You bet your sweet marjoram they do! One favorite aunt and perpetual gardener told us she has a special plot reserved just for plantable favors received at weddings. Could there be a more romantic corner in any garden?

Truth be told, Queen Victoria started a similar trend with ivy, back in the day. Thanks to her, it was all the rage to tuck a sprig into your bouquet, which you could plant at home after the wedding. Then, when she came of age, your daughter could use a clipping from that very same ivy in her bouquet, and plant it again. Pretty romantic, these floral traditions, no?

As brides strive to "green up" their weddings every way possible, plantable favors are one of the simplest, most charming ways to meet those goals. And while plantable favors run the gamut from bamboo to baby trees, it's the seed paper favors that are easiest to store, plant and care for (as lovely as the idea is, not many people have room in their yards for an unexpected tree)!

What's more, seed favors can double as placecards or save-the-date inserts, and offer by far the most style options -- ones that will fit your own wedding like a garden glove. So celebrate the spring and summer months ahead with the perfect guest gift: plantable seed favors!

Entitlement Vs Earning - How to Avoid Harmful Help As A Parent

"But I want it NOW!" As if yelling this over and over creates the right for a child or even an adult to get what they want when they want it. Willy Wonka in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory identified the undesirable results of a child who gets what they want when they want it. In the movie the spoiled little girl, Veruca Salt, demands that her father get her a squirrel with the capability of sorting good walnuts from the bad just like the one's she sees in the Wonka Chocolate Factory. The push over father finally asks Willy Wonka how much one costs. Receiving the response from Mr. Wonka that the squirrels were not for sale, little Veruca takes it upon her self to collect a squirrel. As a result the spoiled child is tossed out with the rest of the "Bad Nuts" with her father close behind.

Baby Trend Play Yard

What was is it that made Veruca just have to have a squirrel and why did she think she deserved one and could simply go and take it? It is simple. Her father catered to her every want. Continuing this pattern over time results not only in spoiled kids but also in kids who feel that they are entitled or deserve what they want simply because they want it.

Baby Trend Play Yard

There's a story about a boy who came from a wealthy family. His father had built a large, multimillion-dollar business from the ground up. As this father approached retirement, he brought his son into his office and told him that he wanted him to take over his company. The son was excited to take over his father's multimillion-dollar empire and asked, "When are you going to give it to me?" The father replied, "I am not going to give you anything, you must earn it." The son replied, "How am I supposed to do that?"

The father answered, "First, you must earn ,000 to purchase a small portion of ownership in the company. After this is accomplished you will get your next instruction." As the son left the house to being his quest, his mother grabbed him and thrust ,000 into his hand and told him to give the money to his father. Thrilled by his good fortune, he ran to find his father. His dad was sitting by the fireplace reading a book. The son approached his father and said, "Dad, Dad, here's ,000 for the business." Without even looking up, the father grabbed the ,000 and tossed it in the fire and watched it burn. The son stood frozen in amazement. As the money burned, the father said, "Come back when you have earned the money!"

As he left the room, his mother once again thrust ,000 into his hand. This time she instructed him that he needed to be more convincing in selling his father on the idea that he had actually worked for the money. So the boy scuffed himself up a little, jogged around the block a few times, and then went to find his father again. His father was again sitting in front of the fireplace reading a book. The boy approached his father and said, "It sure is tough earning money. Here's the ,000. I really do want to own the business." Once again the father took the ,000, and without even looking up, tossed the money in the fireplace. As the money burned, the son asked, "How did you know I didn't earn the money?" The father replied, "It is easy to lose or spend money that is not your own."

At this point, the son realized he wasn't going to get the business unless he actually earned the ,000. He wanted the business, so when his mother offered him money again, he declined her offer. He went out and picked up some odd jobs. His jobs required him to get up early and stay up late, but he worked and worked until he finally earned ,000. Proudly, he walked into his father and presented him with the money. Like before, his father was sitting by the fire reading a book. Again the father took the money and threw it in the fire. As the money hit the flames, the son dove to the floor and risking burns and pain stuck his hands into the fire and pulled out the ,000. The father looked his son in the eyes and said, "I see you really did earn the money this time."

Many parents make the mistake of provided damaging financial assistance to their children. Their motives are usually good. They want to help their children get started in life or assist when a financial need rises. Unfortunately, the result is often opposite to the one desired. Instead of helping children become self sufficient, they become dependant. Rather than sparking initiative and discipline, the children become idle and indulgent. Instead of being achievement oriented they become entitlement oriented, ungrateful and demanding. Fred G. Gosman, author of Spoiled Rotten, wrote, "Children who always get what they want will want as long as they live." Research from the book The Millionaire Next Door has shown that "in general, the more dollars adult children receive [from their parents] the fewer they accumulate, while those who are given fewer dollars accumulate more." How can we make sure our children grow up with the earning mentality rather than the entitlement mentality?

While starting my first business, I often relied on one of my business partners and mentors, who was a multimillionaire, for advice. My business was growing but struggled to turn a profit. I continued to work hard but things were getting tougher and tougher for me financially. I went to my rich partner and asked for a loan to help me get by until the business was profitable. He declined to give me any assistance. I was a little frustrated and said, "You are making millions a year and I am struggling to stay alive. Please help me." He looked at me and I could tell he wanted to help me. He was close to giving in to my plea when he replied, "If I take away your struggle, I will also take away your victory." He then shared the following story.

"There was a young boy who came across a caterpillar hanging in a cocoon. He went to see the cocoon several times each day waiting for the butterfly to emerge. After a few days, the young boy began to see the cocoon move as a butterfly struggled to come out. The boy a little impatient and wanting to help ran home and got a pair of scissors. He returned and carefully cut open the cocoon and out fell a partially developed butterfly. This caterpillar would never fly. The young boy innocently killed the butterfly he was trying to help." At the time, I didn't find this advice helpful, but today I am grateful to a wise partner and mentor who resisted the temptation to cut open my cocoon and take away the struggle of life while starting a business.

One of the best ways to create an earning mentality in our children is to teach them how to work. Work helps get rid of the idea that one is entitled or has the right to something. I have identified 3 important factors that help teach children good work ethics. Parents need to look for opportunities to assign or create chores and work for children that have the following characteristics:

1. Purpose

The job assigned must have real life purpose. As a child, there was a large vacant plot of land behind my house that was very proficient in growing weeds. Dad sectioned off the plot and gave each child a section. The instruction was simply to keep the weeds down by pulling the weeds by hand. I can remember hating this job because it was always hot and dusty and the weeds grew fast and tall. I finally asked my dad why we had to keep the weeds down. Dad then explained that it was to make sure the weeds don't spread into the yard and garden so the grass will be soft to play on and the garden will grow lots of good food to eat. This explanation gave my sweat and pains a purpose that I was willing to work for. I still didn't like weeding my section but, now understanding the purpose of the job, I had motivation to make sure my plot was free of weeds.

Sometimes as parents we give chores that simply have the purpose of keeping our children busy. These chores are probably better than letting children sit in front of the TV or play video games all day. However, jobs with real life purpose, once accomplished, will ignite a feeling of true accomplishment and contribution to a collective or greater good. The feelings of purpose and accomplishment are feelings everyone desire. It is wise to use these feelings to fuel future assignments with purpose.

2. Consistency

Parents need to be consistent in assigning chores. If making the bed is an important skill or chore you want your child to learn or accomplish then you as the parent must be consistent is giving the assignment everyday and just as consistent in following up and making sure the job is done and done well. If you are as consistent in assigning a chore and just as consistent in following up and helping the child accomplish the chore then the child will progressively and consistently accomplish the chore alone.

The job that teaches good work ethics is one that is on a consistent schedule. Punctuality is important in the work place and in life. It wasn't until I got a job my first job out side of the home that I realized the importance of consistency. While in Junior High I worked at a local grocery store where I was required to be at work on time. I've found that those who had jobs outside of the home while still in high school have a stronger work ethic than those who did not. Having noticed this trend leads me to believe that teaching a child to work is not simply teaching them how to do a few jobs but it's teaching a way of life.

3. Perseverance

One of the hardest parts of life is to continue to do something when it is no longer fun or when it never was fun to begin with. The world would teach our children that such uncomfort or pain should not be tolerated. The world would go as far as to teach that if pain is felt then what ever is causing the pain is bad and should be avoided. It is on the contrary that good work ethics are learned. It is important to teach our youth to continually work past the point of comfort. Not many reach this point regularly, but it is here that character is permanently built. Learning good work ethics takes persevering through the uncomfort and beyond the pain of work.

Right out of High school I worked at a lumber mill in Idaho. My job was to stack lumber as it came off the saw. This was the most physically demanding job I've ever had. At the end of every day I was physically drained from being baked in the saw mill from the summer sun and from keeping up with the mill as it relentlessly kicked out lumber to be stacked. It was just a miserable job. I remember asking myself during one of my short breaks if this job was worth the pain. The thought and answer came back that "It wouldn't be called work if it wasn't work!" Well, that didn't really help me feel better but it did help me understand that not all work is fun.

Business owner and church leader, Spencer W. Kimball said "I remember some years ago, a young man and his wife and little children moved to our Arizona community. As we got acquainted with them, he told me of the rigorous youth he had spent as he grew up. He'd had to get up at five and six o'clock in the morning and go out and deliver papers. He'd had to work on the farm and he'd had to do many things that were still rankling (irritation/resentment) in his soul. Then he concluded with this statement: 'My boys are never going to have to do that.' And we saw his boys grow up and you couldn't get them to do anything. They [sluff] off their church activities and nothing seemed very important to them."

If you protect your children from struggle and responsibility, you will also prevent them from growing. Help you child learn how to work and earn by assigning work that has real purpose, consistency, and requires perseverance. Good work ethic and the earning mentality cannot be purchased with money but are developed through experience, responsibility and education. The Entitlement mentality is a form of bondage for it is simply living off of others -for if you take from a person his responsibility to care for himself you also take from him the opportunity to be free. Do not simply give your kids money, give them education and opportunity and teach them how to work. It costs a lot less and will develop the productive, self sufficient children you desire.

Childhood Obesity and Overweight Children

Looking out over the yard during recess, Mrs. Nyeberg saw Adam standing apart from a group of the other children who were playing. She knew that once again Adam had been left out of their games. He was endlessly taunted about his weight by the other children and had very few friends at school. At 8 years old Adam was already 40 pounds heavier than the other children.

The Epidemic

Baby Trend Play Yard

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over 9 million children ages 6 to 19 years old are overweight or obese. In a frightening trend, this number has tripled since 1980. In this same time period, childhood obesity has doubled for preschoolers (2-5 years old) and adolescents (12-19 years).

This problem is not limited to the United States but is a growing epidemic in many countries. In a country that is seemingly obsessed with weight issues we should be declaring this issue a national emergency.

Ignoring the Issue

Believing that children may merely have "baby fat" or grow out of their weight problems is a fallacy. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This number increases to 80 percent if one or more parent is overweight or obese.

UCSF researcher Robert Lustig, MD, professor of clinical pediatrics at UCSF Children's Hospital notes in a review of obesity research that the Western diet is the key reason for childhood obesity.

Lustig offers that our high calorie, low fiber diets promote hormonal imbalances that encourage children to overeat. Other factors commonly attributed to the rise in obesity include frequent fast food dining, too little physical activity at school and home , larger portion sizes, and lack of sleep. Another key factor cited in numerous studies, and perhaps the most important - parents.

Parents

Parents play an important role in the growth, development, and socialization of children (Darling and Steinberg 1993). Additionally, overweight parents may pass on a combination of genetic predisposition to becoming overweight and unhealthy eating habits to their children. An Australian study showed that fathers who were permissive or disengaged were more likely to have children with a higher body mass index (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/70064.php). Obesity in children is far more than a vanity issue. Along with the rise in childhood obesity is a dramatic increase in diseases and conditions that were previously more prevalent in adults.

Health Problems

A new study revealed that obesity in adolescents is related with reduced heart functions and excessive cardiac mass. Combined with the tendency to become hypertensive this is a life threatening issue.

Being overweight puts a greater strain on the still developing bodies of children. Childhood obesity puts children at greater risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, joint problems, sleep disorders and more. One in three obese children has excess fat in their liver. This excess fat could lead to hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver failure. Not to mention the emotional toll on children who are subjected to teasing and/or isolation by their peers.

Seek Medical Help

Your physician can determine if your child's weight is healthy. The doctor will use a growth chart to compare your child's BMI to other children of the same age and sex.Cutoff points on these growth charts, established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), help identify overweight children:

o BMI-for-age between 85th and 95th percentiles - at risk of overweight
o BMI-for-age over 95th percentile - overweight

Your doctor will also evaluate your family history, your child's calorie intake and eating habits, other health conditions, and activity level.

Dr. Kal

I was an overweight child and an obese teen. I understand the physical, emotional, and mental pain it can cause. On my blog, I will provide weight loss strategies for children and their parents. Stay tuned.

How to Sell Your House in Any Market - Make Your Home Irresistible to Buyers

"How can I sell my house for the most money in the least time" is an even more important question in a buyer's market. 'Dressing' your house is the answer, and it's something anybody can do. It's sometimes called 'staging' or 'fluffing', but 'dressing' is a more appropriate term. These techniques have been used by professionals for many years but information has been surprisingly hard to come by for the layman. Here you'll learn the secrets and why they work.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Many buyers think they'll be able to look past a poorly decorated or empty house, but they do have a negative psychological effect on most people. Have you ever noticed that successful home builders always use a professionally decorated Model Home or Sales Suite? Buyers want to fall in love with their new home, and it's very hard to do that if it's cluttered, in disrepair, out of style, or empty.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Every realtor knows that the longer a house is on the market the lower the final selling price will be. 'Dressed' houses sell twice as fast as 'non-dressed' houses. A survey in California of 2,772 homes showed the average number of days on the market for non-dressed houses was 30.9, while dressed houses sold in 13.8 days.

Phenomenal Return On Investment

Some of these techniques involve spending a little money, and many people have a psychological block against spending money on something they won't get to enjoy. But when you look at the Return On Investment (ROI) you'll realize this may be the best investment you'll ever make. Research shows that houses that have been 'dressed', sell for more money, and the higher selling price more than makes up for the investment.

Statistics from the National Association of Realtors show that the optimal amount to spend on 'dressing' your house is between 1 and 3% of the home's value, and it brings in an average Return On Investment of between 8 and 10% in increased selling price. So if your house is worth 0,000, then investing between ,000 and ,000 will return an average of ,000 to ,000 in increased selling price.

Even if you look at a less than average possible scenario - if you invest ,000 and get a return of ,000 in 5 weeks, you've received a net profit of 7 times your investment. That's a Return On Investment of more than 4,200% on an annual basis. It's difficult if not impossible for most people to find another investment with that rate of return.

The key to making your home irresistible is this: "Once you decide to sell, you have to understand that this is no longer your home. It has turned into a great opportunity to make thousands of dollars in extra cash. YOUR home is waiting for you somewhere else."

UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HOME BUYERS

Dressing your house is about understanding and appealing to the psychology of home buyers. They want a home that's bigger, maintenance free, and a step up in class from the home they're living in now. And they need to be able to picture themselves living there.

Making your house look bigger There are a few simple techniques you can use to increase the perceived size of even smaller homes:

Leave an absolute minimum of furniture and wall hangings, perhaps half of what you have now, and put the rest in storage. You may think the rooms look empty but leave them for a few days and see if you get used to them. Although you may be proud of your furniture you'll be more proud of selling your house quickly for the right price. Make it completely free of small items and clutter such as magazine racks, small plants, stools, garbage containers, umbrella stands, shoe racks, CD racks, and throw rugs. Use large accessories such as cushions, table lamps and flower pots. Turn on all the lights, open all the curtains. Add a coat of off-white paint. If you need to, consult a professional with help on colors.
Giving the impression of a maintenance-free home

Upgrade electrical switches, plug-ins, lighting and plumbing fixtures to give the impression that your wiring and plumbing are up to date and will be maintenance free. Make your home spotlessly clean. People naturally feel that if the surfaces of a house are well maintained, things below the surface are in the same good condition. A clean house also feels more comfortable. Be sure to hide all your cleaning materials. Having them visible just reminds people about doing chores.
Gaining a competitive edge with style and features

Every house in your price range is your competition. The first step in gaining a competitive edge is research. You need to find out what style should your house be, what features should it have, and how much you should ask.

Style - When most people are buying a new home they want to take a step up in class. If your house is just as ordinary looking as their current one why should they buy it? They are looking for a home they can be proud of. To find out what current house decorating trends are, look through magazines like Better Homes and Gardens. Look particularly at what colors they use. Of course you want to stick to soft neutral colors in general but also look at the accent colors. Fancy cushions give the appearance of luxury. You can buy large pillows for your sofa in the latest colors. Put a slip cover on your old sofa if it is out of style.

Make sure none of the rooms in your house have been decorated in a particular theme. Themes appeal only to a very limited percentage of the population and in order to make your home sell it needs to appeal to the most possible buyers. Paint any rooms that need it with soft warm colors, not bright white. You want your house to feel comfortable, not stark or institutional.

Features - What are your house's advantages and disadvantages over other houses for sale in your area? Dressing your house is about highlighting the positives and minimizing the negatives. Compare your house to the standard for your price range and improve the points where it is below standard. Have a look at the age of people who are moving in and out of your neighborhood. Are they empty nesters looking for a smaller home that is easy to maintain, young couples with small children, or growing families looking for more living space? This will affect what features your house should have. For example, people with young children or empty nesters may want to use one of the bedrooms as an office or den.

Asking Price - The best thing to do here is call an experienced realtor you can trust. They should be able to give you access to a comprehensive website such as realtor.ca or mls.ca where you can conveniently do your research. Most importantly they'll provide you with a comprehensive Comparative Market Analysis to help you establish the correct asking price. A Comparative Market Analysis will show you what houses have sold for in your area and what features they had, as well as which homes are your competition.

The time to dress your house is before you do anything else, before you ask your realtor to come over and certainly before any pictures are taken. Your house has to look its best on your realtor's website. Having your house already dressed will affect the recommended asking price.

Imagine Yourself Living Here People need to be able to picture themselves living in your house, and you make it more difficult if you have personal photos on display, your collections, and any personal items at all. Remove yourself completely from the equation.

TAKING ACTION

Take Pictures Before Dressing Your Home - The first step in dressing your home is to get hold of a digital camera and take pictures of every room in your house from every angle, including what prospective buyers would see if they pulled up in front of your place right now, before it's dressed. Then after leaving them for 3 or 4 days, take them to a nearby coffee shop. This is important. Leaving them for a while and viewing them off your premises is the only way to ensure you'll be looking at them objectively, seeing your house as prospective buyers would be seeing it. Don't confuse this exercise with your final photography session. This is the 'before' set of pictures that only you will see. The photos you use for selling your home will be taken after all your dressing has been done.

The Best Bang For Your Buck - The cheapest things you can do that bring the most Return On Investment are:

Lighten and brighten Clean and de-clutter Landscape and yard work Repair electrical and plumbing
Curb Appeal - The most important place to scrutinize is the outside front of your house. This is not only what prospective buyers see first when they drive up, or drive by, it's also going to be what people see on real estate websites. You want people to look at the photo of the front of your home and say "What a nice looking home. Let's see what the inside is like." Large flower pots, small shrubs, and hanging plants on the outside can increase your home's curb appeal tremendously.

In The Kitchen - The next most important places to improve are the kitchen and the bathroom, because that's where new owners will be spending most of their time. New cupboard handles and hinges, or a granite countertop can make a huge difference in the luxury appeal of both your kitchen and bathroom. If you have small kitchen appliances on the counters, first put away the ones you hardly ever use. Then buy new ones for all the rest. Of course you take them with you when you move. Put half of the things that are in your cupboards in storage, and buy small cans and packages of food to make the cupboards feel larger. Be sure to buy a new shower curtain for the bathroom.

Entry Way - The next most important area of your home is the entry way. Here again, it's about making a good first impression. If you do that, there is a much better chance that buyers will be sold on your place before they even see the bedrooms or basement. The front door is important because it is the focal point of the front of your house. Replacing or painting it with a touch of class would probably be a money making investment.

Make a Budget - Look at what projects around your house need to be done, such as remodeling or repainting. Set deadlines and budgets and plan how you will meet them. The cost and time required for each will help you to decide on which order they should be tackled, and if you need to get help or hire a professional.

Avoid Hidden Deal Breakers - Most people don't know the smell of their own place. Either you aren't sensitive to smell or you simply get used to it. It's very difficult to be objective about the smell of your house. The best thing to do is invite a neighbor or a friend you can trust to come over, and be sure to stress that they must be brutally honest. Then don't just cover up the smells, get rid of their root causes. There are service providers that specialize in getting rid of odors in homes. Be sure not to put a potpourri out before a viewing. These days so many people have allergies or are sensitive to strong odors that you will most likely be doing more harm than good.

Last Minute Touches That Really Sell - Before someone views your home open all the windows for 20 minutes to bring in some fresh air. Even if you don't have a smelly place it will be good to get rid of any stuffy feeling. If you like you can bake cookies or squeeze some lemons. Both are appealing natural smells. Fresh flowers are always a nice touch. Play soft FM music at low volume.

In my next article I get into the specifics of exactly how to accomplish all your 'house dressing' tasks - room by room and item by item. Then we'll get into dressing special properties such as vacation homes, rental properties, vacant homes, and talk about flipping homes. We'll conclude with more exceptional tips and valuable knowledge about putting your best foot forward at show time.

Prison Wives: The Forgotten Women In Our Society

Having a husband in prison is a stigma in our society. However it is possible to cope and get through this difficult time in your life. Let me help you along the way and give you a few tips.

Baby Trend Play Yard

I myself am a "Prison Wife." My husband has been in the prison system for the past 22 months. He was first in a minimum security unit, a place called "THE FARM, " with open doors, and no barbed wire. Now, he is in a half-way house, hoping to come back home the summer of 2005.

Baby Trend Play Yard

The "Prison Wife" is the forgotten one, as she waits at home for her husband. Our society takes care of the sick, the dyimg, the homeless, but the prisoner's wife is alone and forgotten.

She is faced with insurmountable problems....financial,emotional, psychological, social, stigmatization, health problems to face alone, children to take care of. She keeps the household "together," until her husband comes home. She works, pays the bills, pays the mortgage or rent, the car payments, insurances. She takes care of the children, repairs for the house, and just about everything else under the sun. Holidays and birthdays come and go. She is alone and lonely, most often faced with depression.
Most find it difficult to even face another day. She lives in hiding because she is afraid the neighbors may find out. So she lies and says he is on a "business" trip, to protect herself...after all, the neighbors would be shocked to know a criminal's wife lives next door to them. And, what does she tell the children? No one wants to let their child play with a criminal's child.

When her husband leaves for prison, the wife goes through a period of "grieving." She goes through the same "grieving process" that a widow goes through. The only difference is that the widow can eventually move on, while the prison wife cannot. The Prison Wife is a "wife," without a husband. She cannot go out and socialize, and it is difficult to make new friends, as she feels she is being "unfaithful" to her husband.

After a certain amount of time (months or even years), it is acceptable in our socity for the widow to step out, and start dating and even re-marry. The Prison Wife who is faithful and dedicated to her husband does not have this option....some women wait years for their man to return...10 , even 20 or more years.

There are close to 2 million prisoners in our country....that makes me wonder just how many wives and loved ones are left behind and forgotten. We think about the prisoner, but never, ever, think about those left behind.....the wives, the children, the mothers, the girlfriends, to name a few. Those loved ones, who did not commit a crime, except the crime of "loving a criminal." They did not commit a crime, and yet they are punished.

When their husband goes to prison, they are not notified by the prison system where their husbamnd is. I believe there should be some notification system in this country. The wife must sit and wait, until her husband is able to place a collect call to her.

There should be support systems in this country for prison wives. There should be follow-up programs for families of the incarcerated, to see how they are coping.

I will now give you some tips on how to get through this period of your life. It is from my own personal experience, and I hope it can help you...........after all, just remember, you are not alone..........there are so many of us out there experiencing the same feelings and emotions...the same problems.

"Ways To Cope"

1. Take one day at a time........Do not think too far in advance. Try to get "through one more day."

2. Plan small projects for each day, and try to reach a goal. For instance, I put all our photos in photo albums, during the first few weeks of my husband's incarceration. When that project was complete, I started cleaning out drawers and closets.

3. Organize tour life............I re-organized bills and mail, using folders and envelopes, and I kept logs, writing everything down.

4. Keep pictures of your husband around the house....I had pictures in every room. I even had one posted on the refridgerator door.

5. Join a church group. I started baking cakes for the monthly cake sale. I enjoyed doing it, and felt I was contributing something to society.

6. Get involved...acquire hobbies. Knitting, needle-point, gardening, writing, keeping a diary....anything. just do something, even if you force yourself to do it. As time goes on, it will get easier, and you will begin to enjoy it. I planted an "Angel Garden," outside in the yard, with angel statues, and flowers. I also began writing poetry, stories and letters to the editor. I also began writing a journal, which became a very important part of my life.

7. Keep in close contact with your husband....Accept phone calls (if you can afford it, as prison phone calls are extrememly expensive), send your husband letters, cards, magazine and newspaper clippings, and computer print-outs of thingd that interest him. Send him pictures (old and new)...Men in prison love to look at pictures from home. It helps them from becoming homesick. My husband has almost 100 pictures that he keeps in photo albums, and loves to share with the inmates, and show them our family and home. If I change something around in the household,or buy anything new, iI take a picture and send it to him, so he always feels connected to our home. I also tkae pictures of the pets, the garden, and the cars.

8. Keep a notebook near the phone at all times. Jot down things you want to discuss with your husband when he calls. Remember, those are 15 minute calls, and there is a lot to say in a short period of time, so get organized beforehand.

9. Cry when you have to, but also try to stay focused. Do not be torn apart by the prison system. You are still a person, and a wife...and you need to be supportive to your husband.

10. Try to stay healthy. Eat right, avoid junk food and alcohol. Exercise. Try walking. After all, you want to be physically fit when your husband comes home!

I hope this article will be of some help to the wives and loved ones of prisoners, as they await their loved one while he is in prison.

A Leadership Guide to Managing the Generations

One of the most common questions I am asked by managers is "how can I manage the 'younger' generation?" It seems every second workplace is having challenges between different generations ...with differences in expectations of managers, work approach and style.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Let me start by saying that what I am about to tell you will be discussing the generalities of generations. Before you leap in and yell "stereotypes" ... listen up for a moment.

Baby Trend Play Yard

The best way I can describe this is by looking at the height of people. Some people are tall and some are short but most people fall within a certain height range or average height.

When people design furniture they look at the average height of people to determine for example the length of the seat in a chair. They base their decision about the chair seat length by looking at general data. That doesn't mean that the seat fits everyone ... for some people it will be too small and some too big but for many the fit will be just right (a bit like Goldilocks).

What you may not know is that the average height of people is changing across the generations. People today are much taller than their counterparts 50 or 100 years ago for a whole range of factors including better health and diet. The generations are physically different as a result of the circumstances they grew up in.

So too with people's attitudes. There are differences between how generations approach work ... what motivates them, how they learn and how they prefer to be managed. There are variances with individuals in the generation ... but there are average trends you can observe.

Most workplaces have at least 3 generations of people working with them ... Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. These are all terms sociologists have used to describe certain age groupings of people.

Baby Boomers were born just after World War 2 until about 1964. That means that today this means people 45 and older. The sort of world they grew up during their formative years included events such as the Vietnam War, Woodstock, the Cold War, the Moon landing & Civil Rights Movements.

Generation X people were born between about 1964 - 1978 which means people between about 29-43 years of age. They grew up in the era of the pill, no fault divorce, the fall of Russia and the Berlin wall, USA becoming the dominant world superpower, the introduction of PCs and they watched their parents be outsourced and downsized at work.

Generation Y people were born about 1979 - 1994 which means people about 13-28 years of age. They grew up with the internet and the technology boom, they generally had extended periods of economic growth and stability and watched 9/11. They were the first generation where building self esteem was as important as building reading and maths skills and they had very busy school years being ferried from sport to dance to school to homework to school extension.

Each generation sees the world differently. Baby Boomers quite often wear the tag "workaholic" with pride. They believe in doing the hard yards to get ahead, paying ones dues and putting in the hours at your desk at work. They tend to value stability in a job - wanting to see extended periods of time in the one company. They believe with hard work they will succeed. They are loyal to the company and assess their managers based on what they see their managers demonstrate in terms of their own personal work ethic.

Generation X people are more cynical than Baby Boomers. They watched their parents put in the long hours when they were growing up, only to be made redundant. Many Gen X people vowed not to do the same ... that they wanted a life not just a job and believe in productive work time not "face time". They believe that any success is up to them.

They tend to distrust management and companies - believing there are always "hidden agendas" at play. They sign up to a manager ... not a company and want the opportunity to express their views and to be heard by their manager. They will change jobs if they are not happy.

Generation Y people are the internet generation. They are used to getting information instantly when they need it rather than holding large amounts of data in their heads. They are self confident and are not afraid to tell people what they are feeling and how a decision affects them personally.

They love to learn new things but also like taking things to conclusion. They need clear goals and objectives to work towards. They want to make a difference to society through their work. They crave constant, honest, mentoring communication with their manager and will quickly leave a company if they don't get it. They don't believe in doing the jobs no one else wants to do just because they are the youngest there.

Some Tips to Manage and Motivate the Generations:

Baby Boomers: Help them get a life ... give them loyalty ... recognise their status and seniority

Generation X: Help them boost their productivity at work ... give them flexible work options ... provide open democratic management

Generation Y: Build in regular ongoing formal learning ... give them clear goals & targets ... establish mentoring schemes

A Daddy Baby Shower - New Twist on the Old Baby Shower

Try something new, a Daddy Baby Shower. Even though no one would realistically expect a new daddy-to-be to sit around with his closest buddies, opening baby shower gifts and playing party games while oohing and aahing over the imminent birth of his child. That doesn't mean that Dad can't have a baby shower-type celebration. Daddy deserves to celebrate the birth of his child, too!

Baby Trend Play Yard

Of course, the term baby shower does invoke visions of baby themed parties. Like the one described above when planning a baby shower. So perhaps "baby shower" is not an appropriate name for this get-together. Why limit yourself with a label, anyway? Call it a "celebrating-Jim's-impending-fatherhood" party, if you want, instead of baby showers for dad.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Here are a few suggestions to make this type of party one for daddy-to-be to remember:

Play Games:
Well, not baby shower games. But you can play poker, horseshoes or even a game of shirts-n-skins football in the back yard.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry:
Have tons of fattening and not-good-for-you foods. Make spareribs, cheese steaks, wings, and anything else you can eat with your hands and make a mess with. The wives won't be there to complain and you can grunt all you want. Have some beers (or soda if you prefer) and barbecue.

Last Night Out:
Take the dad-to-be out for a night on the town to rival his bachelor party. Do some bar hopping, play some pool, shoot some darts, and don't go home until you are kicked out of at least three places. Keep Dad safe, though, and designate someone to stay sober and make sure everyone gets home in one piece. You might also want to check with mom-to-be to make sure she is okay with this plan. She is, after all, pregnant and might not be all that amenable to the last-night-out-before-fatherhood party.

Gifts for Dad-To-Be:
Let the official baby shower take care of the baby necessities. Give Dad gifts for himself, or gifts that he would have chosen for the baby. Buy him a diaper tool kit, complete with goggles, rubber gloves, tongs, clothespin, and of course, diapering essentials, or a Daddy Gear Diaper Bag.

Gag gifts are fun, too. Or you could buy clothing for the new baby with Dad's favorite sports team's logo or matching Dad and Baby t-shirts. Think about necessities like batteries, too. Most likely they won't be on Mom's registry, but all parents know that batteries are a hot commodity in any house with children. Be creative.

And don't forget that Dad might need some reading material to get himself up to date on the latest parenting trends. Consider getting him a book on fatherhood, funny or otherwise, or maybe a magazine subscription for daddy, such as American Baby Magazine.

Ask other new dads to think about what toys or objects were particularly helpful when their little ones were inconsolable, and either buy or recommend them for the times when dad-to-be is home alone with Junior.

Comfort Dad:
New Dads are usually pretty stressed out about what there life is going to be like after the new baby comes. Be prepared to have guests tell funny and helpful stories about their own experiences with becoming a daddy. Make it a point to reassure him that his wife is not really crazy, she is just hormonal and this, too, shall pass.

Remember, daddy baby showers don't have to be like the traditional shower, or even called a shower, but you can have one for dad just the same.
