The Latest and Greatest Trends in Throwing an Outdoor Party

All across the country, people are already summer, barbeques, graduation parties and weddings. An increasing number of these gatherings are being held outside. From the entertainment to the dinner, everything is done outside of the confines of a stuffy room. If you are planning to join the growing trend of throwing outdoor parties, I would begin doing some serious planning now from finding a caterer to renting outdoor canopies.

Baby Trend Play Yard

The best place to hang out during any summer party is the outdoors. So plan your outdoor party around a pop up canopy. A really well built pop up canopy can make or break your festivities. We all love a good party with good company so make sure the canopy tent you choose has enough room to accommodate everyone.

Baby Trend Play Yard

The outdoor pop up tent is quickly becoming the most important item needed to entertain guests at your outdoor event. Your party is going to require a place to cook and prepare the food along with a place out of the way to store it. Most parties take care of this particular situation by delegating a separate instant canopy for only food.

The pop up canopy should fit in and suit your back yard. The last thing you want is a tent which is too large for the space you have or worse yet too small for everything you need covered. The pop up canopy is great too because you can comfortably fit a few chairs and tables for your guests to sit at. Here they can eat, talk about their lives, and discuss what a wonderful party you are throwing.

Party lighting should fit easily along the instant canopy and be bright enough for all the guests to be able to see but not so bright that it is annoying. Choose decorative lights that go along with not only the pop up tent but also the overall theme of the party. An outdoor wedding would dictate different lights than a graduation party or baby shower.

Nothing can make or break your outdoor gathering than the type of music being played. The wrong music can clear out your backyard's canopy tent faster than a nest of bees. Pick out music fitting to the theme of the party and music your guests will enjoy. You wouldn't play heavy metal for your grandmother's birthday party. Select music that will fit the crowd. If need be, walk amongst the outdoor canopies and ask what type of music everyone would like to listen to.

Set up a separate pop up canopy for your guests to dance. Be sure that this instant canopy for dancing is free of clutter. The last thing anyone wants is for grandpa to trip as he's dancing to a polka song.

Strategies to Prevent Childhood Obesity

What can be done about childhood obesity? It is an epidemic, a major health problem, and one that many people do not or will not see.

Baby Trend Play Yard

"Oh, it's just baby fat" says one person while another says, "My child will only eat sweet food, I can't get him to eat anything else."

Baby Trend Play Yard

Childhood obesity affects nearly one-third [33%] of children in the U.S.A. - that's a large number of real children. These obese children are getting sick with what were once considered adult-only illness - heart ailments and diabetes. They are also more prone to psychological issues such as poor self-esteem and depression. And all this has led to a decrease in their life expectancy is shortened.

We as a country need to stop this epidemic - and stop it soon! Children are our future and we need them - and we need them as healthy and developing as optimally as is possible.

Here are some simple strategies for your child and for YOU the parent

set a good role model talk about nutrition discuss the effects of obesity exercise

And here are 7 steps you can take to help you strategize:

1. Keep healthy, more natural, food around the house. Young children do not need to go food shopping. The parents have control over what appears in the household food area. If there is no candy, no soda, no sugar-laden cereal - the kids will not be eating it.

As for those who say their kids only eat sweet stuff - do not worry - your kids won't starve themselves - they will eat what you have and they may even find they like the more natural foods.

2. Read labels in the store. You may be surprised to find that you cannot even pronounce what is in the package you are holding.

3. Talk to your children about the difference between food and chemicals - they may be very interested in learning this "adult" kind of information - and who knows? You may produce a budding scientist!

4. Discuss nutrition, obesity and the consequences. Your child understands all this - and you can get books from the library for your and your child's age levels on the topics.

5. Get daily exercise - play with your kids - toss balls, chase each other, run around the yard or street, take walks together [especially if you have a dog.]

6. Limit the amount of time in front of the TV and have a rule of NO FOOD while watching TV. This is for the adults too - we tend to munch mindlessly when we watch TV.

7. Drink more water. Many times we think we are hungry but we are really in need of hydration from water. Skip the sodas completely - they don't count as hydration!

Types and Brands of Diapers to Use For Bed-Wetting and Companies That Sell Them Part 2

Disposable briefs are the term for adult diapers. They come in youth and adult sizes and look and fit just like Pampers-they have tape tabs, elastic leg gathers(in addition some have elastic waist bands for added protection) and either a non woven cloth like outer cover or a plastic outer covering. It seems like within the past several years the adult diaper manufacturers are following the lead of the baby diaper manufacturers and are using a non woven cloth like outer covering with their diapers. I think the reason for this is twofold. The first reason is that perhaps it makes the diapers more breathable which means they might be more comfortable with some users, and second it makes the diapers more discreet-i.e. there is none of the telltale crinkling or rustling sound that diapers with a plastic outer covering make when the user moves around. However some people claim that the non woven cloth outer covering makes the diapers feel clammy when wet, they cause abrasion between the legs, and they're not as effective at protecting the individual. As for purchasing diapers that have a plastic outer covering and make a rustling noise,if the person is only wearing them at night this shouldn't be a concern.

Baby Trend Play Yard

If parents decide to purchase plastic pants and cloth diapers to manage their youngster's bed-wetting there is one thing to keep in mind and that is the terminology used in referring to waterproof pants. Before plastic pants came out parents used rubber pants for their babies. Then plastic pants came out and even though people used both styles of pants for awhile, eventually the rubber pants were phased out. I don't know of any companies that make rubber pants for babies but there are a couple companies that make rubber pants for older children and adults.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Many people use the term "rubber pants" as a generic term for waterproof pants particularly plastic pants. Nowadays when people use the term "rubber pants" they actually mean plastic pants. I guess after rubber pants were phased out and plastic pants became the dominant pant used for both babies and incontinent adults the term "rubber pants" just kind of stuck and many people continued to use the term "rubber pants" as a catch all term for waterproof pants. Also "plastic pants" are the same as "vinyl pants"-vinyl is a type of plastic so people use the term interchangeably. Finally if you decide to buy waterproof pants from another country such as Canada or England it's important to beware of the following. Some companies manufacture and sell "PVC(which stands for polyvinyl chloride) pants. This is also a plastic material and these pants are the same as the "vinyl" and "plastic pants." I just wanted to bring this up so people aren't confused when buying waterproof pants. I've also heard some people use the term "rubber sheet" as a generic term for waterproof sheets-particularly plastic or vinyl sheets.

Regarding choosing a product to manage the youngster's bed-wetting this can be a tough choice for many parents. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, there are a number of different styles of garments out there. Second there are many brands of diapers to choose from. This can be very overwhelming. To make things more complicated there are styles within styles. For example if parents use cloth diapers there are many different ways to fasten the diapers and as a result different styles. These include pin-ons,diapers with Velcro, snap-on diapers, and pull-ons. The pin-on diapers come in different styles-prefold, flat, and contour. Contour diapers are hourglass shaped diapers without elastic in the legs or back. Flat diapers are rectangular diapers made with one layer. Prefold diapers are also rectangular shaped but have layers built in with more absorbency sewn into the middle part.

Cloth diapers are also made of different fabrics such as gauze, birdseye ,flannel, and diapers lined with terry cloth. Some of these fabrics are more breathable(and as a result more comfortable) than others and some are more suitable for bed-wetting. For instance some companies have cloth diapers specifically designed for night use-i.e. they have extra absorbent layers sewn into the diapers for added protection at night. Cloth diapers like disposable diapers come in both youth and adult sizes. Also if the parents choose to use cloth diapers they must use waterproof pants to cover the diapers.

The most popular form of waterproof pants are plastic pants. The current crop of adult and youth size plastic pants seem to be better made then the plastic pants made years ago. Comco, Suprima, and the Leakmaster Deluxe pants (made by Gary and sold by Adultclothdiaper.com) are just three brands of plastic pants that have a reputation for being made of a real thick durable plastic and thus well made. I've also heard that with some waterproof pants if the person uses various protective creams before putting on their diapers these have a tendency to break down the material of the waterproof pants. This seems to happen primarily with rubber pants(although this might just be the case with certain brands).

Waterproof pants come in two styles-pull-on and snap-on. From what I understand the snap-on styles are used primarily with bedridden and non-ambulatory patients because with these types of patients the pants are easier to get on and off. In addition it's to my understanding that snap-on plastic pants are used by parents for their babies because presumably these are easier to put on and take off(although personally I would think it would be just as easy using pull-on plastic pants since we're dealing with a small child. I would also think in a situation like that it would be relatively easy to put the pants on as opposed to putting them on an incontinent adult which would probably be harder for various reasons).I've also heard that snap-on plastic pants might be more breathable due to the fact that there's a slight opening because of the snaps. This in turn allows air to circulate more freely. That being said from what I understand the snap-on plastic pants are prone to leaks with some users at night especially if the user moves around a lot or sleeps on his or her side. Also I've heard that there's a tendency for the snaps to break in some cases. Finally snap-on plastic pants are more expensive than pull-ons.

Disposable diapers for heavy urinary incontinence such as bed-wetting come in two styles-pull-on and tape-on briefs. Disposable briefs as mentioned previously have the same design and fit as baby diapers. You can also get diaper doublers known as booster pads, liners, and diaper inserts to put in disposable diapers to increase the level of absorbency in the diaper. Some companies also have inserts for cloth diapers. I've heard of some people lining their cloth diapers with baby cloth diapers which can be purchased in places such as Walmart and Target.

People have different opinions as far as what type and brand of diapers to use for bed-wetting-some people swear by a certain brand or style of diapers whereas others try the same brand or style and don't like it. Many companies have samples of disposable briefs for various incontinence needs which they will send you either for free or for a nominal fee. In addition to using diapers the parents should cover the bed with a waterproof sheet in case the diapers leak. Waterproof sheets generally come in two styles, flannel with a rubber backing and plastic(also known as vinyl). The vinyl sheets in turn come in two styles-zippered or fitted. Although there are other styles of waterproof sheets the vinyl and rubber sheets seem to be the most popular ones.

I've heard about people using all types of covers to protect their youngster's bed. One woman on a parenting forum said she used a plastic tarp to cover her child's bed. In addition I've read that vinyl shower curtains are a good way to protect the bed. One woman I knew covered her daughter's bed with a regular plastic sheet. For example if you have a roll of plastic sheeting (like the kind you get in a hardware or contractor supplies store) or are considering buying one you could cut off a piece and place it under the fitted sheet or mattress pad. Many people have a roll of plastic sheeting to use for stuff such as yard work, painting, remodeling, concrete work, covering materials stored outside, covering mulch, etc. In addition some people probably have a roll of plastic sheeting from back when Homeland Security was encouraging everyone to buy plastic sheeting to protect against terrorist attacks.

If you do have a roll of plastic sheeting you might consider using some of it to cover your child or teenager's bed. There are several reasons for this. One,since you already have the plastic on hand it saves you money because you don't have to purchase waterproof sheets(not that waterproof sheets are all that expensive but in today's day and age every penny counts). Two,the hardware store plastic is pretty durable and will last for a long time. Three, you can customize how much plastic you cut to lay over the child's bed. Fourth, you can cut multiple sheets which means you don't have to use the same sheet over and over which cuts down on wear and tear. Plastic sheeting comes in several thicknesses including 3,4,and 6 mil. My feeling is the thicker the better because if the youngster rolls around a lot at night there's less wear and tear on the plastic which means it will last longer. Besides the woman I just mentioned I'm not sure if anyone else uses this type of plastic to protect the bed from bed-wetting but sometimes it's good to be a trend setter. Like with any other situation in life it's good to think outside the box and experiment with new ideas. This might be a cost effective and practical way to deal with bed-wetting.

If parents decide to use either the plastic sheeting from a hardware store or a plastic tarp to cover their child or teenager's bed it's important to keep in mind that this type of plastic makes a rustling sound which some people might find unpleasant. The crinkling noise of the plastic might make some children, adolescents,or teenagers feel self-conscious. On the other hand some individuals aren't bothered by this. Some children might be bothered by it at first but eventually get used to it. Since most bed-wetters are deep sleepers they might not have any problem adjusting to the crinkling of the plastic. One way to deal with this is to put the plastic under the fitted sheet or mattress pad and to place several layers of sheets or towels over the plastic. This will muffle the crinkling sound of the plastic. If however the youngster does have difficulty sleeping in a bed covered with this kind of plastic the parents should consider covering the bed with another type of waterproof sheet.

If you decide to go the cloth diaper route and if your budget permits you might want to consider purchasing the various styles of diapers such as pin-ons and pull-ons in addition to choosing diapers made of the different fabrics previously mentioned in order to determine what works best in your particular case. Pin-ons might be the best choice in many circumstances particularly for bed-wetting. There are several advantages to using pin-on diapers for bed-wetting: a.)these tend to be the most absorbent of all the styles of cloth diapers b.) with Velcro diapers the Velcro can wear out after a number of washings and c.)with snap-on diapers sometimes the snaps come off. d.)you can layer more material in a pin-on diaper(i.e. you can put more inserts in a pin-on diaper) than a pull-on diaper in order to make it more absorbent which is especially good for night use as people tend to wet more at night..Adding more material to a pull-on cloth diaper isn't as feasible because it tends to bunch up and one woman I spoke to at a company that sells both kinds of diapers says the pin-ons are more secure and the pull-ons tend to sag if the user is a heavy wetter. In addition it's hard to keep the inserts in place in a pull on cloth diaper. A couple other people I spoke with also said that in general you have more flexibility with the pin-on diapers as opposed to the pull-ons. For instance you have a lot of latitude with how and wear you fold them in order to prevent leaks-you can make them thicker on the sides,in the front,or in the back. I read about an individual who is a side sleeper and he overlapped more material in that area in order for the diapers to offer better protection with this particular situation.

I suspect that the pull-on cloth diapers are better suited for daytime use and people who have light incontinence-the pin-ons on the other hand are generally better for people suffering from heavy incontinence such as bed-wetting. In fact many people consider pin-on diapers to be the best diapers to manage bed-wetting.

There is one more thing I'd like to bring up regarding cloth diapers and plastic pants. Some people find that the cloth diapers and plastic pants are too hot and as a result too uncomfortable to wear in the summer months and during this time they switch to disposable diapers. Also some people alternate between disposable tape-on diapers and cloth diapers-on some nights they wear the cloth diapers and plastic pants and others they wear the disposable diapers so they don't have to wash the cloth diapers as much. The thinking behind this is that it saves some wear on the cloth diapers. Parents might want to consider experimenting with both kinds of diapers to determine what works best in their particular situation.

Choosing an incontinence product is like everything else in life-there's no one size fits all solution. It requires a lot of experimentation and trial and error. This entails getting other people's opinions(there are incontinence forums where you can pose questions about various brands and styles of garments) and then trying the brand or particular style of diaper. Keep in mind that a person's recommendation of a particular brand or style of diaper is just an opinion and while it's good to get other peoples opinions you have to try the brand or style of diapers out yourself and come to your own conclusion.

Also before buying a whole case or pack of a particular brand of diaper it's advisable to contact the company to see if they have samples available-after all you wouldn't want to spend a lot of money for a product that might not work for you. A person shouldn't get discouraged if they have difficulty finding the right product to manage their bed-wetting. With a little persistence and patience they'll eventually find a garment to suit their needs.

Right now I'd like to give a list of several companies and their contact info that manufacture and sell both cloth diapers and plastic pants and disposable diapers for older children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults that wet the bed. I'd also like to mention several brands of both cloth diapers and plastic pants and disposable briefs that have good reputations particularly for night use. There are several companies who sell disposable diapers that are highly regarded by many people. One such company is HDIS which stands for Home Delivery Incontinence Supplies. They have a personalized delivery plan in which you can set up a schedule in which to have your products delivered. For example if you order a case of diapers and they run out in 4 weeks you can set it up with them beforehand to have another case delivered before you run out. You can set it up for whatever delivery time you need. You also get a five percent discount on cases of diapers if you order this way. I would check their website or give them a call for further details. Continence Connection is another place that sells a wide variety of incontinence supplies. They're run by a nurse named Robin Howe who specializes in incontinence.

XP Medical is another company which has a good reputation. They have a large selection of diapers. Their number is (888)485-2268  ABAIP(A Better Absorbent Incontinence Product) also has a large selection of diapers and from what I understand they are run by a person who is incontinent so they will be especially knowledgeable in this area.Their number is (888)401-5311.If you need cases of diapers for your bed-wetting child or teenager I would check with several mail order places to get the best deal. As with everything else in life it's important to shop around.

As far as pin-on cloth diapers and plastic pants are concerned there are a number of places that sell them. Angel Fluff diaper company manufactures and sells pin-on cloth diapers for older children, teens, and adults. Their phone number is (800)996-2644 Another company that makes pin-on diapers is Loving Comfort. Their phone number is (717)308-0662.Kins a company out of Canada also makes pin-on cloth diapers for older children, teenagers, and adults. Their phone number is (800)665-2229. Finally Adultclothdiaper.com makes and sells pin-on diapers for older children, teenagers, and adults. Their phone number is (877)215-9004.

With regard to plastic pants, many people recommend the Comco plastic pants. Apparently some employees of the original Comco split off and formed their own company called Comco Manufacturing. The original Comco is based out of St. Paul, Minnesota and is called Comco Inc. They sell plastic pants, cloth diapers, and waterproof sheets. I'm not sure if they still do this but if a customer wanted a vinyl sheet of a certain size to cover the bed they will cut it to whatever size the customer requests. If interested you might want to inquire about this. Here's their contact info: Comco, 2270 3rd. Street, North Saint Paul, MN 55079.Their phone number is (651)779-7313 and their fax number is (651)779-0871. They also have a tool free number-(800)328-9658. Their email address is comco@mindspring.com and their web address is www.comcoincmn.com They have a pull-on plastic pant known as the style 230 for .60 each and a three pack for .85.

The other Comco is based out of Hinckley, Minnesota and is called Comco Manufacturing. Their contact info is Comco Manufacturing,LLC, P.O. Box 550, Hinckley, MN. 55037. Their web address is comcomfg.com and their phone number is (888)250-8577.They also have pull-on plastic pants. The price for one is .50,the price for a three pack is .50,and the price for a six pack is .00.The pants from the Comco in Hinckley, Minnesota have a wider waistband and are cheaper than the ones from the Saint Paul Comco but the vinyl they make their pants from is different. I spoke with the owner of the original Comco based out of Saint Paul,Minnesota and he said their pants are nothing like the pants made by the Comco in Hinckley MN. He told me that the pants from his company are made from a different formulation of vinyl than those manufactured from the Comco in Hinckley MN. I'm not sure if this means they're necessarily better made than the ones from the company out of Hinckley but the fact that they do use a different type of vinyl could play a part in how well made they are. It seems that when the employees from the original Comco left to form their own company they started using a different type of vinyl to make their pants which makes sense when you think about it.

Some plastic pants are better made than others and the fact that the Comco from Saint Paul does use a different type of vinyl could make them more durable. The best way to find out is to give both pants a try and see which one lasts longer. Also the Comco from Saint Paul has been around for at least 30 years(maybe more) which also might give them an edge with some people-experience means a lot especially in this area. Many people feel comfortable buying products from companies they've dealt with for years due to such factors as customer service, the fact that they have a good relationship with a particular individual or individuals in the company, etc .

There are some individuals who might prefer the Comco plastic pants made by the Comco from Hinckley, MN due to the fact that they have a wider waistband and they're slightly cheaper, whereas other individuals might prefer the Comco plastic pants made by the Comco in Saint Paul MN due to the fact that they're made from a different type of vinyl which could mean they're more durable and as a result last longer. In addition the Comco from Saint Paul has been around longer and the owner whose name is Burch has a lot of experience in this area. With some individuals it might be worth the extra expense to buy pants that are more durable and to purchase items from a company that is more established. As I said it might be prudent to get a pair from each and see which one you like the best.

As mentioned before Adultclothdiaper.com (also known as All Together Enterprises) also sells a style of plastic pants called the Leakmaster Deluxe which has plastic covered elastic leg and waistbands. The Suprima plastic pants are another brand of plastic pants that are highly regarded by many people. These pants are made out of pvc (polyvinyl chloride) which as mentioned before is a type of plastic. The Suprima pants are made in Germany and sold by a Canadian company called B4NS. The web address is http://www.b4ns.com and their phone number is (514)812-4917. The Suprima pants are made of a real thick type of plastic and some models also have plastic covered elastic leg and waist bands. Many people claim this makes them particularly effective for protecting against leaks especially during the night. I was on their website recently and I noticed they have several different models of the Suprima plastic pants. Some of the models have a higher back, wider elastic, and wider crotch than others which also might help bed wetters. The S1212 is one such model. I would call or email the owner of the company and discuss with him your specific needs and ask him what type of pants would best meet those needs. As a matter of fact it's a good idea to do that with other companies that sell incontinence garments as well, in order to determine the products that will best suit your needs regarding absorbency, price, etc.

Storage Auctions - Myth Vs Reality

With so many eager bargain hunters flocking to their local storage facilities in hopes of chasing down priceless hidden treasures, it's inevitable that some folks are going to have their hopes dashed as soon as the unit doors fly up and the only thing that greets them is trash bags and dirty clothes. Property managers all over the country have been struggling to manage an influx of bidders that have never even been to a storage facility before, as well as the jackpot expectations these newcomers bring with them. From a management perspective, there are positive and negative aspects to this flood of attention. More frequent incidences of property damage, arguments between inexperienced bidders and high volumes of calls from bargain hunters that have no intention of renting units are certainly irritations to managers and the facility owners.

Baby Trend Play Yard

On the plus side, the increased foot traffic and higher auction turnout is also converting into higher final prices for storage auction units. Small repossessed storage lockers that at one time might have sold for as little as are now regularly bringing in upwards of 0. This trend is due almost exclusively to television shows like Storage Wars and Auction Hunters that are suggesting to viewers a far higher frequency of jackpot storage units than may actually exist. In the eyes of a property manager, foot traffic is always a good thing, since it means more exposure for the facility. Even if the auction hunters themselves do not rent any units, they may mention the facility to friends, thereby disseminating the brand and increasing the likelihood of future word-of-mouth referrals.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Many newcomers to the world of storage auctions wonder why these special sales even occur in the first place. The answer to this question actually dovetails with a number of conspiracy theories cropping up on the internet in print that suggest that delinquent storage unit auctions are entirely made-up; a mere product of a clever reality show ploy to secure viewers. The truth of the matter is that storage auctions have been around for a long time. They're real. End of story. Auctioning off the contents of a delinquent unit is legal recourse of self storage properties that find themselves in a financial bind when a tenant abandons their belongings or simply refuses to pay their rent for months at a time.

What isn't exactly true is that every repossessed storage unit you see sold by auction is going to produce diamonds, jewelry, antiques, heirlooms and collectibles to the tune of thousands upon thousands of dollars. This is just not the way it works. Briefly consider the logical progression of a storage unit auction in order to determine for yourself exactly how rare it is to find a storage unit with heaps of valuables and no junk:

First, someone rents a storage unit because they have belongings they prize highly enough to want to secure and retain them. They have to have sufficient money to cover the sign-up fees along with at least the first month's rent. Some storage facilities require a cleaning deposit, and some facilities that do not offer month to month storage rentals require that the new tenant pay a few months in advance. This means that people who put valuables in storage not only had enough money to initially obtain those valuables, but they also have enough money to cover the start-up fees for their unit rental. We can conclude from this that, excepting some totally unforeseen disaster, most wealthy storage tenants are not going to become unwealthy enough quickly enough to lose their valuables to a public auction.

That's not to say it doesn't occur. There are innumerable scenarios that can see even the most organized and well-intentioned storage facility tenants unable to make contact with their property manager quickly enough to prevent their unit from going to auction. Sometimes people get stuck abroad and lose all contact info for their facility and eventually lose their will and ability to keep up with their payments. These kinds of scenarios are far more likely to produce the types of repossessed storage lockers that shows like Storage Wars and Auction Kings need to produce their episodes.

What does all of this mean for beginning storage unit pickers that want to get involved in the exciting world of storage auctions? Simply that success in this business depends on determination, patience and keeping your expectations in check. If you always go out planning to find your own private box of riches behind the next storage shed door, you will almost always end up disappointed. However, if you play smart, always buy low and resell everything you find inside via yard sales or online auction sites, you can and will turn a profit over time.

Other Peoples Homes (2) Elvis, Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee

In the words of Paul Simon, "I'm going to Graceland, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee" and now I've been but, in my case, with a travelling companion several decades more than nine years old and a devoted fan of the "King of Rock and Roll".

Baby Trend Play Yard

Since Elvis Presley's death in 1977, Graceland, the house purchased by Elvis in 1957 and in whose grounds he is buried, has become a shrine to the memory of Elvis and a centre of pilgrimage for thousands of fans who visit every year.

Baby Trend Play Yard

Graceland was built on a hilly, heavily wooded thirteen-and-three-quarter-acre site on the two-lane Highway 51 connecting Memphis with Jackson, Mississippi, for a Dr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Moore. Over time the name "Graceland" came to refer specifically to the house but originally it applied to the entire area which was establish as a Hereford cattle farm in 1861, by S.E. Toof, the publisher of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. It was named after his daughter, Grace Toof. Ruth Moore, who built Graceland the house, was Grace's niece who planned the house for her daughter, Ruth Marie, who played the harp and piano. Music seeped through it's very foundations. The rooms were designed with an eye to future musical evenings and space was essential. A Commercial Appeal headline for Sunday, October 27th 1940 heralded the "Colonial Courtliness of Georgian Style Exemplified in Stately Graceland". The home that has come to symbolise Elvis.

The house was opened to the public in 1982. I understand about 650,000 people a year pass through the front door. Graceland has become one of the five most visited home museums in the United States and in 1991 gained the honour of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Joining one of the many shuttle tours that operate from downtown Memphis, I, personally was prepared to be disillusioned. Would it all be hype and tasteless, but hey, forever curious about other peoples tastes and extravagances it was a 'must do' visit. Surrounded by fellow travellers, devoted Elvis fans, who have all come to see not only where Elvis lived by how he lived, the tour began.

The neoclassical façade of white Tishomingo stone with windows shuttered in contrasting green present a truly tranquil, elegant and stylish house. Entering through the Corinthian columns on the front portico, the "formal" Dining Room and Living Room are lavishly decorated in blue, white and gold colour scheme and given a spacious feel by the mirrors which are a predominant feature of both rooms. The centrepiece of the Dining Room is a spectacular Italian cut glass chandelier purchased by Elvis on an after-hours shopping spree at Belvedere Lighting in Memphis in August 1974. In the Living Room stunning peacock stained-glass windows designed by Laukhuff Stained Glass of Memphis, separate the Living Room from the Music Room. The same company that did the stained glass work around the front door and the stained-glass billiard light in the Pool Room.

Moving into the Music Room, decorated predominantly in gold and white, a black Story and Clark baby grand takes pride of place. The most famous person to play it other than Elvis was James Brown who recalls singing gospel songs with Elvis. The wall mirror in the Music Room illustrates the fact that a lot of things were kept; things weren't thrown away and trashed over the years. This mirror dates back to the Presley's previous home on Audubon Drive where they lived prior to moving to Graceland. The stairway in the hall leads to the upper floor of the house that disappointingly is not open to visitors. I would have loved to have had a nose into the bedrooms and the four bathrooms. The chandelier over the stairs is the largest one of three in the house and the same design as the one in the Dining Room, in the Maria Theresa design. The third chandelier is Strauss crystal and hangs just inside the front door in the foyer.

The TV Room, decorated in black and gold with mirrored walls was decorated in its present style by Bill Eubanks who also decorated the Pool Room across the hall. All the chrome, glass, chrome arc lamps and sectional black furniture are very much the style of the 70's including a yellow leather topped bar and bar stools! The most spectacular feature of the Pool Room is the fabric used to cover the sofas, walls and ceiling. We are told it took something between 350 and 400 yards of fabric and three workmen about ten days to hang it. The room, with its French, Oriental and turn-of-the century European influences is an example of the Seventies American trend toward eclectic decorating, mixing styles of various eras and countries. A similar "retro" trend emerged again in the Nineties. None of the furniture is antique. Most chosen to complement the general décor including the reproduction Louis XV red leather chairs.

All the pictures are either prints, some signed by artists, or - like the Toulouse Lautrecs, just regular commercial reproductions. The gold, green and peacock blue light shade over the pool table is again, the work of Laukhuff Stained Glass in Memphis and done in the revived Tiffany style. Possibly the most spectacular and unique room of the visit though is the Jungle Room. Added to the house in the mid-Sixties it functioned as a screened-in porch, then it was closed in completely and made into a family room or den. Legend has it that Vernon, Elvis' father had been out and about and had seen some hideous furniture in a store in Memphis. Apparently, unbeknownst to Vernon, Elvis had seen the same furniture and had liked it because it reminded him of Hawaii. He bought a whole roomful of it. The big "monkey chair" is so enormous that one of the windows had to be removed to move it into the room. Much of the room's décor seems to be tactile, as with the fake fur on the bar stools and the heavily carved wood, the exotic feathered mirror frame and the ornamental animals.

The indoor waterfall completes the theme although we are told that it wasn't turned on very often because it tended to make the carpet wet.
Finally the office. Housed in a building that was already there when Elvis bought Graceland. Vernon ran the office and had a staff of secretaries to handle fan mail and all the household and personal bills. Elvis gave a press conference sitting at his father's desk in this office in 1960 the day after he returned from his tour of army duty in Germany. In photographs it is possible to see that it is the same desk, same blotter, lamp, filing cabinets and cards on top of the filing cabinet.

It is recorded that when Elvis was a child he made a promise to his parents that "One day, I'll buy you the prettiest house in Memphis, and I'll pay you back for all you've sacrificed for me". Graceland represented that to him. Both house and garden provided a fascinating visit. One I would have no hesitation in recommending to others and one I would happily repeat if I ever found myself back in Memphis, Tennessee.

We're Football People Now (A Parent's Journey)

INTRODUCTION

Baby Trend Play Yard

The fans of the South Eastern Conference take their college football very seriously. Year in and year out they lead the country, dominating overall attendance records. In 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 the conference drew more than 5.5 million fans at its home games; a national record for a conference. Football Fanatics, you bet, and they wear the badge proudly.

Baby Trend Play Yard

I on the other hand reside at the other end of this spectrum. My parents were not sports people and it simply was not part of our family structure. I would half-heartedly follow our local sports teams but only if it was convenient. If the game was on and I happened to be sitting in front of the television then great, or if there was a radio handy I might tune in. Never in my wildest dreams could I have envisioned the journey on which I would embark with my own child.

TYPICAL PARENTS

Like most baby-boom-era parents my wife Stacy and I were determined to expose our children to everything we could from sports to music to dance to theatre to whatever. Following the generational trend, we wanted to afford our kids those things that we simply did not have available to us as children. It is amazing how much has changed over the course of only a few decades. What really accentuated this point was one Christmas when Santa brought a Game-Boy for Willy, my eldest of three; while he was sitting there on the floor playing Ninja Turtles he looked up at me and asked if I played Game-Boy when I was little? That simple, innocent question tells the whole tale. Game-Boy - PS2 - Xbox 360 - Wii, heck, all I had access to was Pong which came onto the scene when I was about eleven years old; my cousin had one so the only time I was able to play it was when I went to visit him. I try to explain to my children that the first time I had access to a computer was in college. We had to sign up for computer time which often was in the wee hours of the morning. They look at me, while texting a message to their friend, as if I am speaking a foreign language. Even our vocabulary has changed; is texting a proper word?

Growing up in the inner city during the late sixties - early seventies the only organized sporting activities available to me were baseball, basketball and football. Tennis and golf were primarily for those belonging to a country club, hockey and soccer simply did not exist and opportunities for swimming, track, wrestling and volleyball were not available until high school. Today children have instant access to the world and exposure to almost anything; baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, scouting, piano, you name it. I told my children early on that they could participate in anything except football and boxing. My wife and I were determined that our children participate in something; what they chose was for the most part up to them. The risk of chronic and even severe injury from football is just too high and boxing is just plain lunacy. Had Extreme Fighting existing during that time it would have been prohibited as well. Everything else was fair game.

WHO KNEW?

Jump ahead about ten years. Alex, my middle child, came home from school one day and told me that he had joined the football team, catching me off-guard and momentarily speechless. He knew the rules, football was off limits. 'Really, what position?' I asked. I'm going to kick, he explained, assuring me that it is the safest position on the roster; kickers never get hurt. I then asked how this came about. Alex's gym class was outside on the football field where he and a few of his buddies, who were already on the team, were goofing around kicking field goals. As it turns out Alex was popping them through the uprights, with ease, from thirty five yards out so his buddies suggested he try out for the team; the coach obviously liked what he saw and Alex became the starting varsity kicker his senior year.

WE'RE FOOTBALL PEOPLE NOW

The most ironic part of this journey is that prior to Alex joining the football team I had never attended a high school football game as an adult and attended only a handful as a student. Perhaps if I had friends on the football team when I was in high school or dated a cheerleader the Friday night games would have drawn my interest.

For all practical purposes high school football was a new experience for me so naturally I had no idea what to expect. I figured that my family and I would attend the games, watch our son kick a few balls and enjoy an evening out. My wife on the other hand jumped in with both feet and did not look back. From the very first game Stacy looked and acted like a veteran football mom. She wore the traditional red, white and black scarf displaying the school colors along with the big button proudly pinned to her chest showing off a photograph of her son in his football uniform. Number fifteen, that's MY child. The photo-button is the official badge of honor for all of the mothers with children who are members of the team, the various cheerleading squads and the marching band. It truly is a beautiful sight to look into the stands and see a wall of moms sporting big photo-buttons accented with red, white and black scarves. Simply put, football is addictive. There is so much emotional purity involved at this level that you cannot help but get caught up in all the excitement. I think the reason for this is that the fans are more vested than at the college or professional level; the high school setting is much more intimate. Parents are obviously going to cheer for their children regardless of level or venue, but the true difference rests with the kids in the stands. They are rooting for friends that they grew up with, friends whose birthday parties they attended and sofas they slept on. These are the same kids who were lab partners in science class and were teammates on the recreational soccer team. The kids on the field and the kids in the stands have literally known each other all their lives. This depth of connection on such a wide scale simply cannot occur at the college or professional level. The kids being raised within the same community is what makes high school sports so special and unique.

From the time my children reached middle school my opening line when I got home would be the same; "How was school, do you have any homework?" Now though, now that we're football people there is an added wrinkle. When I speak to Alex it is, "How was school, do you have any homework, how did you kick today?" Like I can advise him if he proclaims that he did not kick well in practice? The only piece of advice I would be able to give that made any sense at all would be to keep your eye on the ball; how profound and utterly obvious. But it was important for me to get a progress report. I wanted to be involved; I needed to be involved, for we're football people now.

DEJA VU

My parents lived ten to fifteen minutes from us yet, when our children were little it would take us forty five minutes to get everyone situated for a ten minute ride. Attending our son's football games resulted in a similar ordeal. We graduated from a checklist of formula, diapers, toys, snacks, juice bottles and extra clothes to stadium chairs, blankets, gloves, hats, umbrella and directions. The one constant was that someone always had to use the restroom at the last minute just as we were ready to walk out the door. A few things in life transcend gender - religion - geography - nationality - economic status - education and language; having a family member run to the bathroom just as you are ready to leave the house can be deemed a universal truth.

THE PORK PIE HAT

When my children were old enough to attend school I went out and purchased a black leather Pork Pie hat which I would dutifully wear to all of their outdoor events. Initially, I wanted to wear a Dr. Seuss hat but my wife said I looked silly; my kids thought it was funny. The Pork Pie is a cool looking hat which I still wear to this day. The main reason I bought it was so my children could easily find me in a crowd. If we ever got separated, just look for the odd looking hat. In a sea of baseball caps my Pork Pie hat stuck out like a sore thumb. It worked well and my children got used to the idea. As they grew older and started playing organized sports they would use the hat to easily find me in the stands. Alex tells me he still looks for the hat while standing on the sideline. Old habits die hard.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Being a disciple of the 'Just in Time' theory the parking lot is already packed as we approach the stadium, so once again I am relegated to waiting in line to drop off my family at the front entrance then park the car. Most nights, the nearest parking spot is a quarter of a mile away which is not a problem unless it is 30 degrees and windy or pouring rain. Unfortunately, I got to experience both. As I make my way to the field I pass a used car lot full of automobiles neatly arranged on the grass between the 'No Parking on Grass' signs. The scope of influence the football program has on local law enforcement is impressive. I purchase my ticket and call my wife to find out where she is sitting. Thank heaven for cell phones, without them I may not find her until halftime when the stampede occurs to line up for pretzels, hot dogs and the all important restroom.

A high school football game is a roller coaster of emotion and excitement from waiting for the team to run onto the field through the tunnel of cheerleaders, crashing through the home made banner - to the halftime show featuring both high school marching bands - to the end of the game when the entire football team runs over to the stands in front of the marching band to pay homage to one another as the band plays the school's fight song. I have come to realize that this spectacle simply has to be experienced first hand to be appreciated and understood. The electricity and energy of a live high school game is invigorating. Boys without shirts, chests painted all screaming at their counterparts across the field - the opposing bands dueling back and forth, these kids were having the time of their lives and it was easy to get caught up in their drama. It made me wonder what I had missed when I was in high school; perhaps Alex, by being a part of the football team is affording me the opportunities I missed out on when I was a student? Maybe it is better this way, as an adult I appreciate it more.

V.I.P.

A dominating high school team brings a celebrity status not only to the players but their parents as well. All of a sudden people I had known only in passing were stopping to partake in detailed conversation with me; at the gas station, the grocery store, and coffee house. Alex is really kicking well, have any colleges approached him yet? Wow, Alex is having a great season I didn't know he could kick like that. Truth be told, I didn't know it either? He must have inherited it from his mother. It is a great feeling being the parent of an athlete. You cannot help but stick out your chest with pride when you hear others in the stands cheering on your son and yelling his name. It turned out to be an experience I never could have anticipated. I savored every minute. In addition I had the good fortune by sheer happenstance, of experiencing events a-typical to a normal football season like watching Alex set a new school record by booming a 48 yard field goal with one second left in the half to helping his team win a State Championship posting a flawless 16-0 record; moments like these are indeed rare.

PRICELESS

Alex told me the highlight of the season was playing the conference championship game at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I cannot imagine how cool it is to play in a professional football stadium, I can tell you though as a parent of one of the players, it is an awesome experience to watch. To sit in the stands and watch your son on that field, kicking up the same dirt as Hines Ward and booming field goals through the same uprights as Jeff Reed is surreal. Ticket to the game - , soft pretzel with mustard - .50, hot dog and drink - .50, watching Alex, larger than life on the Jumbo-Tron, running off the field pumping his fist after burying a field goal - priceless.

As impressive as watching Alex play at Heinz Field was, the highlight for me came several months later at the Pennsylvania East-West All Star Game. When I saw Alex run out of the tunnel onto the field my jaw literally dropped. I was stunned, almost paralyzed from the sharp chill piercing through my body; I was covered with goose bumps. There it was, as plain as day sprawled across the back of my son's shoulders; ROMANIAS. His name, my name was on the back of his jersey. I was overwhelmed; I never saw my name on the back of a jersey before yet there it was staring at me, taunting me, seducing me. Seeing my name on the back of that jersey was a profound experience. It caught me completely off guard; it was phenomenal. Several times during the course of the game I would lean over to remind my wife just how cool it was to see my name on the back of that jersey.

WHAT A RIDE

Who could have imagined that kicking field goals in gym class for fun would have resulted in such a magical journey? Prior to this season the last high school football game I attended was in 1978 when I was a junior. Now, we're football people.

Next stop, college; I guess Stacy will have to get another big photo-button and a new scarf while I dust off the Pork Pie hat. Thanks for the ride son!
