What can be done about childhood obesity? It is an epidemic, a major health problem, and one that many people do not or will not see.
"Oh, it's just baby fat" says one person while another says, "My child will only eat sweet food, I can't get him to eat anything else."

Childhood obesity affects nearly one-third [33%] of children in the U.S.A. - that's a large number of real children. These obese children are getting sick with what were once considered adult-only illness - heart ailments and diabetes. They are also more prone to psychological issues such as poor self-esteem and depression. And all this has led to a decrease in their life expectancy is shortened.
We as a country need to stop this epidemic - and stop it soon! Children are our future and we need them - and we need them as healthy and developing as optimally as is possible.

And here are 7 steps you can take to help you strategize:
1. Keep healthy, more natural, food around the house. Young children do not need to go food shopping. The parents have control over what appears in the household food area. If there is no candy, no soda, no sugar-laden cereal - the kids will not be eating it.
As for those who say their kids only eat sweet stuff - do not worry - your kids won't starve themselves - they will eat what you have and they may even find they like the more natural foods.
2. Read labels in the store. You may be surprised to find that you cannot even pronounce what is in the package you are holding.
3. Talk to your children about the difference between food and chemicals - they may be very interested in learning this "adult" kind of information - and who knows? You may produce a budding scientist!
4. Discuss nutrition, obesity and the consequences. Your child understands all this - and you can get books from the library for your and your child's age levels on the topics.
5. Get daily exercise - play with your kids - toss balls, chase each other, run around the yard or street, take walks together [especially if you have a dog.]
6. Limit the amount of time in front of the TV and have a rule of NO FOOD while watching TV. This is for the adults too - we tend to munch mindlessly when we watch TV.
7. Drink more water. Many times we think we are hungry but we are really in need of hydration from water. Skip the sodas completely - they don't count as hydration!
